Rock and Roll with Greil Marcus
Monday, January 26, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., $15/$10 members. Holiday Inn By the Bay. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Join Greil Marcus, author, music journalist, and cultural critic, as he riffs on rock & roll and the Museum's exhibition Backstage Pass: Rock & Roll Photography. A passionate spokesman for rock & roll in pop culture, Marcus was the first records editor for Rolling Stone and has written columns for Artforum, the New York Times, Salon, and Interview. He is the author of Mystery Train (1975, 2008), Lipstick Traces (1989), The Old, Weird America (1997), The Shape of Things to Come: Prophecy and the American Voice (2006), and other books where he re-defined music criticism. His column Real Life Rock Top Ten appears in each issue of The Believer. This lecture is in conjunction with the exhibition Backstage Pass: Rock & Roll Photography, on view January 22 through March 22, 2009 at the Portland Museum of Art. To purchase tickets.
